They all seem to trigger the crash. It did once start successfully with
one or more enabled after restarting gdm3, but that seemed to be a
one-time fluke.

No.

I used a console to take a snapshot of .xsession-errors while the
recovery screen was showing. I've attached it, but it doesn't seem very
informative. Is there anything I can do to make gnome-shell more
verbose?
