What exactly does that mean? Was that a complete, fresh installation of
Debian, did you keep your /home directory.
Or when you are speaking of mate, do you mean the unofficial,
unsupported 3rd party repository that is available for Debian.

If you are installing Debian GNOME wheezy from scratch, can you still
reproduce the problem?
