dpkg-reconfigure gdm3 gives:

Job for gdm.service failed. See 'systemctl status gdm.service' and
'journalctl -xn' for details.                   
invoke-rc.d: initscript gdm3, action "reload" failed.
root at g6 (/backup) % cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager 
root at g6 (/backup) %
