Bug#784386: gnome-shell doesn't show applications from /var/lib/menu-xdg/applications/menu-xdg/

Recently upgraded to Jessie. Gnome shell doesn't show applications
that do not have a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications. For
instance gltron. Not sure if this is a bug with gltron, but the
menu-xdg package converts Debian menu entries to .desktop files.

Shouldn't gnome shell be set up to read entries from
/var/lib/menu-xdg/applications/menu-xdg as well?

I couldn't find how to easily add my own applications to the list.
