Yep, i just ran it down to the particular upstream commit that
introduced the problem, as noted in the upstream bug above.  I'm working
on understanding the rationale for that commit, and figuring out why
it's causing this behavior.  What we're definitely seeing is that the
secmem_malloc's memset is clearing the contents of the original buffer.
