As far as helping goes...
Currently, I am a bottleneck, because I am the only Debian developer on
the GNUstep team, and I unfortunately don't have much time. New GNUstep
packages are in the process of being built right now, so there isn't
much help that we need immediately. However, if you want to help
long-term, here is how to get started:

- subscribe to this mailing list, if you are not subscribed already
- look at the bug reports filed against the GNUstep packages in Debian
- check out the sources from our arch repository. See
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianGNUstep/Arch for more information on our
arch repository. (note that the arch repository only has the sources
from the last release, and not the one that Gürkan worked on)
- familiarize yourself with the packaging. The debian/rules file for
the core GNUstep packages are a tad more complicated than the average
Debian package. We also insert a bit of extra packaging
infrastructure to help with other packages, most of which is poorly
documented (read: "not at all documented"). If you have any
  questions, ask.
- look at http://wiki.debian.org/DebianGNUstep/TODO
- see if you want to help/adopt other GNUstep-related packages in Debian

I'm probably forgetting something, but this should do for now...
