[DebianGIS-dev] Bug#537414: unconviced...

Hi!

I just got hit by this again on an upgrade...

I am not sure I am happy with the "wontfix" tag, considering that the
reasoning behind is incorrect. Please explain how the fix would possibly break
anything. Currently, there is no way to use HDF5 1.8 API in Debian, not at
all. And I do believe that is worth fixing. Or please state a good reason to
completely disable the 1.8 API - note that I do not care which API is the
default as long as there is a way to change it.

Like the original reporter (Chun-Chung Chen) noted, there is already a way to
use 1.6 API by defining H5_USE_16_API when compiling old code and I am quite
happy with that being the default (at least for now), but there should be a
way of actually using the new API as well!

My "fix" does not break anything, it merely makes it possible to define (yet
another) macro, which re-enables the disabled 1.8 API in Debian libhdf5. If a
user does not do anything special, everything will work just as it does now,
unless H5_I_REALLY_DO_NOT_WANT_OLD_API is defined. You can make that macro as
complicated, or even make it a 256-character long random string to make sure
no one will have used it before, if you are afraid of braking existing
programs.

Best regards,
Juha
