I'm not sure about this one. We should remove the language extension,
but because this breaks QGIS we don't. Once QGIS supports GDAL tools
without language extension we will remove them in GDAL.

This may or may not happen anytime soon, and with that in mind we could
consider patching out the .py extension in the mean time. But I'm
inclined to say that it's not worth the effort.

Would you be willing to provide this patch?
