Bug#384152: update-grub: generates wrong device entries in menu.lst

Stefan Schwarzer stefan.schwarzer at gmx.net
Tue Aug 22 09:11:43 UTC 2006

Package: grub
Version: 0.97-13
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

in short: whenever I run update-grub, it changes the device entries for
kernel and initrd location in menu.lst from (hd0,0) to (hd2,0) rendering the
system unbootable (without additional work).

in more detail: my setup is a bit unusual. I have two optical drives on
the primary IDE bus and one harddisc on the secondary bus, used for backup.
The system boots from an SATA drive in native mode for which I need to
put the (hd0,0) entries in menu.lst to be recognized as boot device.
If I use grub from floppy, it finds the kernel and initrd on my
root filesystem using the (hd0,0) device/partition identifier. However,
update-grub seems to think that it is smarter and changes the entries
to (hd2,0) - oohps.
