Yes, I rewrote update-grub from scratch, using a clean, modular dessign a few
days ago (the result is extendible via a simple "plugin" interface, and ~10
times smaller).  Currently this is stalled waiting for upstream to commit some
features I need, but I expect to make it in for etch.

Also, because of rewriting from scratch, copyright issues are sorted out and it
can go to upstream.  If you want to track it down, check grub-devel (I'll send
my patches there).
