Bug#482688: Stopped booting after upgrade

Severity: critical

After upgrading to 1.96+20080512-1 my laptop does not boot any more. 
There is only the short notice "Welcome to GRUB" (or similar), then the
system reboots. No menu is shown.

downgrading to 1.96+20080429-1 "solves" the problem.
