Sorry for taking so long to answer. For some reason my system started
to bootup just fine, with grub-pc 1.96+20080831-1, so maybe the
regression is in another package?

I'll try to "guess" when did the laptop start botting and see what I
upgraded that day (I'm almost sure I did and aptitude upgrade that day
as I do every morning).
