I wasn't aware this is a regression. I'm rising severity untill we know better
what this is caused by (fortunately it doesn't affect the version in lenny).
We need your help in tracing this down. Please test the versions (both you
and Marc) between 1.96+20080724-10 and 1.96+20080831-1 to find which one
introduced the problem.
You'll have to fetch different snapshots from upstream SVN, build them, and
test them one by one. Let me know if you need assistance in how to do that
(preferably, through IRC in #grub @ freenode).
