Does this still happen?
>From the postinst I don't get it why it shouldn't asked you
if /boot/grub/menu.lst exists and debconf didn't already asked you the
question.
I just tested it and it worked fine for me.
Though dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc didn't asked again the question, I had
to purge the package for it.
