yes, the problem was with the vmlinux entry, which was left over from
some previous work i was doing with oprofile. it wasn't supposed to be
there and the system booted fine off of the second entry (i've since
removed the vmlinux file and regenerated the file).
so i'd say this a non-issue, or perhaps at best a wishlist issue that
vmlinux files shouldn't be included in cases where they can't be
booted (i don't know if it's grub-pc missing the support, the platform,
or if it was just a corrupt vmlinux file in which case there's no fault
on the part of grub-pc).
