Point taken. Trixe d-i doesn't boot in UEFI on this host, which would
suggest that the filesystem type used for the root partition may well
be a red herring.

What googling the error shows is lots of people on Ubuntu derivatives
with hosts booting via UEFI to a btrfs root partition. Some of the
reporters claim that making a fresh install using ext4 for the root
partition solved it. This suggests that the error about unsupported
option (subvolume) may be the cause. Others report that it
reinstalling with an ext4 root partition did not solve it. This
suggests a larger issue with recent GRUB code changes.
