~    Please see /usr/share/doc/java-package/SUPPORTED for the list of
JRE/JDK downloads that java-package supports.  We have generally
continued supporting some JRE/JDKs even when vendors indicate that one
is an in-service replacement for the other.  However, at the point that
the downloads for a given JRE/JDK can no longer be retrieved legally, we
have typically discontinued support.
~    Multiple JRE/JDK installations will always be possible, as that is a
very common occurrence for the very reasons you have mentioned.
However, currently, multiple point releases under a given vendor is not
possible.  For instance, you could have a Sun 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5
installation, but not 1.3.0 and 1.3.1, or 1.4.1 and 1.4.2.
~    This bug is somewhat frivolous and I think we should close it.
