No, it is without the '-e' switch in the script. But yes, when I reproduced
it from the command line the '-e' switch was necessary.

$ grep ^co /etc/inittab
co:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty hvc0 9600 vt100

I did make the observation that just removing the echo statement eliminated
the problem.
