Yup, that’s what Anton was getting at.  The script as shipped uses the
literal ASCII character for ESC and doesn’t need -e, but your version
does because of the escape for escape :-)

Other than not blacking out the text, did you notice any other behavior
that occurs/fails to occur when you remove the echo statement?

I actually wonder if this escape sequence, apparently introduced eleven
years ago (#60721) to work around some mild chaos introduced by a
special gimmick in the kernel, is still necessary nowadays.  Anton, do
you know anything about this?
