Helping hands are always welcome. But, keep in mind that digikam is not an
easy package, it has many dependencies, and any breakage in it could destroy
the user photos database, or even delete them. I would recommend you start
with a simpler package.

The packaging efforts are currently stored in svn, under the
svn://svn.debian.org/svn/pkg-kde repository, in the folders:
kde-extras/digikam/{trunk,branches,tags}

This was managed by svn-buildpackage, afaik. Most other packages have already
been migrated to git (Yet another point to start with another package).

I think that the first steps are to checkout the repository subfolder and get
it to build.

More info in: http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/pkgkdesvn.html and the debian
wiki, in particular: https://wiki.debian.org/svn-buildpackage

Happy hacking,
