If we want something like this, would krita be an adequate replacement?

digikam, while it supports this, is focused on another use and is a large
application. I use skanlite and find it suitable for this use. I think it
should be included as 'scan a document' is a common thing to need to do.

I don't use any of the above, but my kids use VLC. My recollection is that
dragonplayer isn't much maintained these days, perhaps someone else knows
more.
