Package: lxqt
Version: 25
Severity: wishlist
Dear LXQt Maintainer,
I have honestly tried my best to be able to use Qlipper, but due to several
long standing issues it was impossible for me. Qlipper project page on Github
suggests this is not a temporary problem. So I am using Clipman from Xfce as an
LXQt tray applet.
As LXQt has no real dependency on Qlipper, I would like to suggest its
dependency be reduced from "Depends" to "Suggests", and adding xfce4-clipman to
"Recommends" list.
The rationale that I suggest including an Xfce4 program in LXQt is that,
1) A clipboard tool is a "sine qua non" in any modern DE, so one needs to be
provided somehow.
2) Providing a new LXQt user with Qlipper is counterproductive to LXQt's
acceptability by a large user base. Those who know what they want and where to
look, can easily find a working clipboard alternative. But there are a lot of
new users who will simply try to use what is provided to them, and Qlipper
makes a bad impression of LXQt for these users.
3) While xfce4-clipman carries "xfce4" in its name, it doesn't pull in any
xfce4 component (except some libraries that may not be used in LXQt, but they
will mostly be pulled in anyway when the user installs some GTK application).
Here is xfce4-clipman dependencies for Buster:
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4), libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 (>= 2.22.0), libglib2.0-0 (>=
2.37.3), libgtk-3-0 (>= 3.19.12), libqrencode3 (>= 3.2.0), libx11-6,
libxfce4ui-2-0 (>= 4.11.0), libxfce4util7 (>= 4.9.0), libxfconf-0-2 (>= 4.6.0),
libxtst6
I do accept providing a component carrying a rival's name can be regarded as an
embarrassment, but I believe proividing users with Qlipper is a bigger
embarrassment for LXQt, IMHO.
Thank you and regards.
