and the issue is still there in mate-screensaver 1.8.1-1 . It worked
great when actively locking screen and was able to input password, but
once screensaver kicks in after 5-10 minutes of non-activity, cannot
get it to accept the password or to borrow Mike's precise statement :-

'the password field will not gain focus whatsoever' and had to (sadly)
kill mate-screensaver to get access to my GNOME/GTK-based
mate-session.

I would be re-logging to the session to see if the same behaviour
persists but at loss if the same thing happens.
