I left out one key piece of info (which I realised as soon as I hit
send, sigh). I
have install-recommends set to false.

However that should not matter. I could quite validly uninstall a recommended
package, and I probably would uninstall gnome-orca if it was installed, so I
would still lose pulseaudio.

It would surprise me if pulseaudio worked when it was not installed. Perhaps
the daemon is not needed for the sound path, but on the odd occasion that I
have had sound issues, I have restarted the pulseaudio daemon and things
have started working. So I expect it needs to be installed.

I did not have problems because I did not let apt uninstall pulseaudio. But I
noted it wanted to, so I felt it important to report in case it was a mistake.

I'm always happy to help Debian, but in this case I know very little of what
is happening with MATE packaging. Perhaps the version mismatch is
deliberate until absolutely everything from MATE 1.10 is available (I don't
know if it's not, just positing) so it is not my place to be updating this
information. It should come from a more authoritative source.
