Thanks for reassigning to the proper package. Regarding your question,
yes, I still see the problem with MATE (when reading .Xdefaults), but
not with other Desktop environments.

There was a git commit on the Emacs tree that changed things and
reverting that commit (actually, it is now quite involved to revert
that, because the code there has been changing a lot) made Emacs work
with newer versions of MATE.

The interesting thing is that other desktop environments work fine,
even without me backing out the change from Emacs.

I can try to see which commit it was and re-test with other
environment, but, right now, I am not using my computer.
