It was meant quite literally: "stat filename" prints the output of `stat` 
command (e.g. last modification time etc.).

Some problems can manifest on presumably clean file system.
Unless a serious error (or scheduled check) triggers fsck you may operate on 
file system with some inconsistencies. It may be helpful to force file system 
check.
