Right, stretch-backports is certainly an option. However I read the
debian-backports mailing list and the backports team is usually not very
happy when people try to fix RC bugs with an upload to -backports.

I have just asked on #debian-release for some feedback and at the moment
it looks like a stretch-pu is ok. I will file a bug report soon and then
let's see how it turns out.
