Good question. ATM, neither me, nor sam nor lool seem to really have
time to update ffmpeg. I tried that in the past, and I noticed that
quite some patches don't apply anymore to up-to-date ffmpeg. Sam
promised me to look at the altivec patches to see if they sould still be
applied and/or update them, but I didn't hear back from him.

So in effect, I'd propose the following: Let's update to a new upstream
version, introducing a SONAME change (I'm pretty sure that by now, the
ABI did change. Sebastian Droege [slomo at d.o] told me at some point
'something' was broken). Any patches that don't apply and are not
obvious how to port them should be dropped. We only "disable" them,
read: we leave them in the source package but don't apply them. Perhaps
sam finds time in the future to review and/or update them. (or confirms
that they can be dropped).

How does sound to you?
