As long as I can do something like this

$ apt-get source ffmpeg
$ sed '1s/ffmpeg-debian/ffmpeg/' -i debian/control debian/changelog
$ debian/rules get-orig-source
$ dpkg-buildpackage

to rebuild unstripped packages, everything is fine.

I don't think so, but anyway, I want to be able to rebuild unstripped
alternatives from the packages already in Debian, not from a separate
branch. I liked the way this was handled before: Rebuild the
orig.tar.gz without stripping and perform the packaging with the
smallest possible interdiff.
