Upstream code depends on python-gtk2, so not _completely_ pointless.

That is a strong accusation. I feel offended by it. Please relax your
tone!
It seems the only dependency on python-gtk - morituri/common/taskgtk.py
- is not used anywhere else in the code, and can therefore be skipped.
Thanks for (indirectly) bringing that one to our attention!
That was _one_ unnecessary dependency. Could you please elaborate on
why other (direct!) dependencies are (technically, not just
philosophically) unnecessary.

Did you closely analyse the code somehow, or simply rip out dependencies
and tried if it worked for the tasks you tried?
If you have some concrete suggestions to help improve the packaging, it
is highly appreciated.
