You've chosen the wrong mailing list, debian-multimedia is intended for
users, but what you really want is pkg-multimedia-maintainers (cc'ed).

WRT packaging, I suggest you read

I guess it's a good idea to follow the -commit mailing list, so you get
an idea how we handle things in the team.

You'd probably pick a few packages that you care about, fix bugs and
provide the corresponding patches via the BTS. Preferably, you'd work
closely with the current package maintainer and get involved. Since it's
all git, the maintainer can integrate your patches without losing the
attribution.

Frankly, we need to feel confident that you know what you're doing.
Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense to grant you write permissions to all
our packages. ;)
