My preferred initial volume level (20 %) seems to also be ignored or
overwritten.
When I use gnome-mplayer, I always get an initial 100 % volume, which
is usually annoyingly high.

Maybe.

At any rate, I think gnome-mplayer should use the settings found in
~/.mplayer/config , unless the user overrules them by configuring
gnome-mplayer's preferences...
