That's a tough call as I don't have any working i386 systems here. Would
it be appropriate to open a bug ticket for this issue and address it in
a later update, after benchmarking?

I can also ask the upstream developer if the performance impact might be
a concern.

Sure, but I think this is highly unlikely as it's a rather specialist
application and doesn't even need network access. On the other hand, a
performance degradation could make the program unusable.
