i386 is really fading out (and i expect that x32 will speed this up some
more).
the question is, whether it makes sense to not enable PIE for a
*specialist* package just because it *might* lead to degredation on a
not-so-relevant-any-more architecture.

i would add a warning in the README.Debian and tell people there that
they should report a bug if they are hit by such a performance degradation.
once you do have a user at hand that actually uses i386 and who is
unsatisfied with performance, it should be easy enough to conduct
benchmarks.

...might (i don't know any details) really mean that the performance
degredation might well be "small enough" with *recent* gcc (james didn't
mention what "old gcc" really means; but since we are targetting
Debian/sid i guess it is safe to assume that the actually used compiler
will be new enough).
