Hi!

lirc maintainer speaking... note that the /var/run/lirc/lircd path just 
is a default configuration value from a lirc user's point of view. 
Specifically, in scenarios with several remotes (e. g., one doing ir 
blasting) the path could be something else. So, even if changing the 
hardcoded default will solve Thomas's  problem, it will not solve all 
users.

A proper fix for this needs to be something accepted by upstream, I guess.
