OK. I guess I can hold on over the weekend. ppa:mysql-ubuntu/collab has
the code, including functional packaging for both Oracle and Percona
variants. I've pushed my git tree to
https://github.com/basak/debian-mysql - this is what I'm proposing to
push to master mysql-5.6 on alioth. In this tree, only the last four
commits relate to the /etc/mysql/my.cnf management change, so this
should be all you need to review.

In mariadb, you'd need to mirror only the middle two commits -
560c9c to ship your required configuration and 31e84a to request that
/etc/mysql/my.cnf point to it.
