I was thinking about backporting this to to the legacy packages and have
some ideas about making n-g-d more general so we can reuse more code,
primarily introducing some LEGACY notation in upstream_info and a
#LEGACY# supstitution as well as a LEGACY placeholder in the template
file name (and LEGACY="" for n-g-d) ...

Hmm, upstream-info could become a Makefile that is just included by
debian/rules ...

It should work with the old n-k-s 190.53-4, but you don't get all the
new features (e.g. more changelogs), but that does not matter.

Lets think about backports to stable later, due to the ia32 transition
this is hard anyway.

As you had some ideas to get rid of the init script entirely - go for
it, now the libGL.so link modification should be much clearer to find in
all the scripts.
