That's wrong. You can do a lot of things with the kernel module without
having nvidia-glx installed: CUDA and OpenCL applications don't need any
X to run. You might even be able to utilize vdpau ...

On the other hand all the applications (glx, cuda, opencl (if you want
to use nvidia hardware)...) depend on the kernel module because they are
not functional without.
