Ah, okay.  That's just not currently supported; our expectation is that if
you're using the NVIDIA installer, you'll install the nvidia-settings
program from that installer rather than trying to mix the two.  Could you
say more about why you don't want to use the nvidia-settings program from
NVIDIA if you're using the official drivers?
