If there is anyone else on this list with a squeeze system using the
legacy-173xx drivers, I need your help to test an update for stable!

I would send you an updated nvidia-kernel-legacy-173xx-dkms package and
you would have to install this and reboot to see whether the patched
kernel module is still working properly.
