Thanks Andreas.

I had tried `sudo update-alternatives --config nvidia_drv.so` but that didn't have any alternatives. I didn't know about `update-glx`.

I just upgraded from debian 8 jessie. I forgot to mention that when I opened this report.

I have tried to uninstall or downgrade the `nvidia-alternative` package. I would like to keep the `nvidia-kernel-3.16.0-4-amd64` package I have installed, but I/aptitude can't find a set of packages that doesn't create a conflict.

I have now run the `update-glx` command you suggested, but it doesn't appear to have affected `/usr/lib/xorg/modules`.

Thanks,
Jayen

You have both the current and the 340xx
 legacy driver installed. The
 alternatives by default select the
 newer driver.

You can either uninstall the current
 driver or reconfigure the nvidia
 alternative this with

   update-glx --config nvidia

and select the legacy driver there.
