That's new in stretch. It's a wrapper around update-alternatives for the
glx and nvidia alternatives, since they need to trigger some additional
actions after switching the glx provider ...

That package is only useful with the jessie kernel.
We don't provide the prebuilt kernel module packages any more, please
switch to nvidia-legacy-340xx-kernel-dkms and don't forget to install
the kernel header meta-package linux-headers-amd64 (or build the module
packages manually with module-assistant from
nvidia-legacy-340xx-kernel-source)

to collect again the system state (alternatives etc.) after that command.
