Right, forgot that the original plan was to keep the tarballs in SVN -
I'll go and look if git LFS is enabled on Salsa - I'm pretty sure
GitLab supports it.

Alternatively, maybe script it so that it gets downloaded from
snapshot.debian.org? Given all the tarballs that we upload end up there
anyway. Not sure how it would look like, just an idea.
