That only updates the nvidia alternative (which is irrelevant to you if
you have only one driver series installed).

The glx alternative is most likely set to manual mode by some earlier
actions you did, so it won't change if you install a "better" variant.

Use
  update-glx --config glx
to change the glx alternative, ideally set it to "auto".
