I think the answer is "no" re compiler/binutils. I tried to
remove gcc-base-10 but attempt unstall of a large number of
packages. gcc-10-base contain no binaries. The libraries are
needed by a /user/local/bin program.

`apt install linux-image-amd64` to grab the current kernel, and I
will report back after retesting.
