I don't know what exactly happened to the owncloud-client backport
during the wheezy cycle. I just remember the issues with the owncloud
backport. But I think that the client is a much simpler package than
owncloud itself. But if the client evolves in a way that it needs many
dependencies to be backported it might become problematic.

I don't know if we can do much against that. But AFAIK tray icons don't
exist anymore in GNOME shell. But I might misunderstand this. At least
when testing the package it showed notifications under GNOME.

Yes I built with libneon-gnutls-dev.

I already based this on your git repository on Alioth. If you add me to
the pkg-owncloud project I will push my branch for review. My branch is
currently named jessie-backports. If you prefer another name, just let
me know.
