I'm a user of cqrlog and was using it in testing before upgrading to the
release.
Unfortunately it only fails on a *clean* install of stretch or a
*distupgrade* to stretch. The first because mysql doesn't get installed
and the second because it gets removed.
Just running testing and allowing the normal upgrades doesn't remove
mysql so things continue to work.

No, I'm told by upstream that it works on that release of Ubuntu. It may
work on Debian testing, but I don't currently have a way of testing
that. I'm happy to test stuff on stable if that helps.
Note that cqrlog is quite clever at finding database client libraries
that it can use and on a Debian stretch system installing the Ubuntu
*mysql* client lib:
libmysqlclient18_5.6.25-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
gets things working again.
