[Pkg-pulseaudio-devel] Bug#545203: pulseaudio: no connection to server possible

i installed pulseaudio with a bunch of related packages (modules, utils)
and tried to access the server with
pactl stat
but it only results in
Connection failure: Connection refused

other tools (paman, padevchooser) show the very same behaviour.
i checked with my ubuntu box and following that added myself to the
group pulse-access, but to no avail.
starting pulseaudio with -vvv neither yields any helpful remarks.
the only slightly intersting info is in syslog, every time i do 
pactl stat
in sysctl the line
pulseaudio[6784]: pid.c: Daemon already running.
is written.

i don't really understand why an out-of-the-box installation of
pulseaudio does not result in a working configuration, more so, since in
tested it yesterday on a debian/sid box with i386 instead -- and it
simply worked.
