I did the same thing (also on stretch) and I'm still able to connect
even though ‘php-mdb2-driver-mysql’ is not installed.  (‘php5-mysql’ is,
like on your system.)

    $ php -m | grep -i sql
    mysql
    mysqli
    pdo_mysql
    pdo_sqlite
    sqlite3
