  I'm not quite sure. I've had this problems, and the thing is that
apparently, some few things are not handled at the C level the same
way in ruby 1.9 than in ruby 1.8; that includes strings, whose API did
change enough to sometimes stay compatible but segfault, or some other
times to fail to build. I doubt this will be resolved by any changes
in the new Ruby, although in my experience, with some care, it is
possible to write code that compiles with both the 1.8 and the 1.9 API
(libtioga-ruby is one of those, though I had some fun changing that).
